![]() On Saturday, StarCraft will turn 20, and we’ll marvel at the mileage on an almost ageless game. Our series continues today with StarCraft, the seminal real-time strategy game by Blizzard Entertainment that reinvented the RTS genre, set the stage for global esports, and established a franchise that remains central to today’s competitive-gaming scene. Throughout the year, The Ringer ’s gaming enthusiasts will be paying tribute to the legendary titles turning 20 in 2018 by replaying them for the umpteenth time or playing them for the first time, talking to the people who made them, and analyzing both what made them great and how they made later games greater. Even at just $15, it's so dark and devoid of detail that I cannot recommend you buy it.Art may largely be a matter of taste, but one conclusion is close to inarguable: 1998 was the best year ever for video games, producing an unparalleled lineup of revolutionary releases that left indelible legacies and spawned series and subcultures that persist today. If this was something I did at kinkos on a lunch break, it would be OK. The amount of detail lost combined with the lack of care taken to truly restore the image is a real bummer. It still has dirt and smudges on it from the original scan. The DOS sticker wasn't touched up at all. So much so that the "gate" being approached has NO texture - it's completely black. Rather than fully "repair" the areas that show wear in the original scan, the entire image was aggressively darkened. The majority of the text was not sufficiently cleaned, and if you're any closer than three feet or so, you can easily see heavy blurring and digital artifacts all over the poster. ![]() However, I do want to mention that the way this scan (and yes, this is a blown up scan, not a recreation) was cleaned up doesn't translate to a great full size poster. So, obviously this is a great piece of box art. It ships in a tube, and arrived undamaged. Just got my 24x36 Japanese Box Art poster. ![]()
